Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney‑General to discontinue prosecutions allegedly initiated on his behalf, stressing his commitment to free speech and democratic values.
The statement follows the arrest and arraignment of a National Democratic Congress organiser in Agona West, accused of publishing false news and making offensive comments about Dr. Bawumia.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, Dr. Bawumia clarified that he had neither lodged a complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against the individual. “The answer to offensive speech is better speech, and the answer to falsehood is truth, not handcuffs, courtrooms, and crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians,” he stated.
He emphasized that throughout his public life, he has endured insults and falsehoods without resorting to the instruments of state power, and he would not begin now. Dr. Bawumia urged that the young man be released to return to his family and livelihood, adding that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including opponents, can speak freely without fear.
The NPP flagbearer further extended forgiveness to the accused and encouraged political actors to focus their energies on issues that matter to Ghanaians.
