The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has confirmed restoring calm during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Effigya Sekyere East Constituency Executive Elections held at the SDA Church polling station in Wiamoase on Sunday, July 12.
According to a police statement, Kwame Afrifa Mensah, aged 43, led a group of about thirty men to the polling station, disrupting the electoral process. Police swiftly intervened, arrested Afrifa Mensah and six others, and restored order.
Afrifa Mensah reportedly claimed his supporters had been sidelined and insisted he had obtained a court injunction to halt the elections. However, police investigations revealed no such order had been issued. Voting resumed peacefully, with results declared around 4:00 p.m.
Later, Afrifa Mensah and another suspect, Osman Awuni, aged 44, complained of ill health and were taken under police guard to the Mampong Government Hospital for treatment.
The press release, signed by Assistant Superintendent Emmanuel Agbodzi, Public Affairs Officer for Ashanti North, assured the public that calm had been restored and the elections concluded without further incident.
