PAC Warns Assemblies Against Misuse of MPs and PWDs Funds

The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Hon. Abena Osei Asare, has cautioned District and Municipal Assemblies to desist from diverting monies allocated to Members of Parliament (MPs) and People With Disabilities (PWDs) accounts to finance their “emergency activities.”

She issued the warning during the Committee’s second Zonal Public Hearing in Kumasi to examine the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report. The hearing revealed that misapplication of funds remains a recurring infraction among several Assemblies, with some reportedly using PWD allocations to cover expenses such as Independence Day celebrations and retirement packages for Assembly members.

Hon. Samuel Atta Mills, Ranking Member of the Committee, who chaired the sitting, directed that all monies taken from MPs and PWDs accounts be refunded within thirty (30) days. He stressed that MPs are not signatories to the Assemblies’ accounts, which often leads to their allocations being spent without their knowledge.

The Committee underscored its commitment to ensuring accountability and financial discipline across public institutions, warning that such practices undermine the intended purpose of statutory funds.
