A communication member of the ruling new patriotic party (NPP)says the 27.15% and 22% utility tariff increment for electricity and water respectively is a standard practice.
Alhassan Ibrahin umar said this during the political segment on Baina TV’s Morning show Tsarin Safiya.
However Nazir, Idriss, Director of Research for the NDC- Ayawaso East disagrees with Alhassan Ibrahim Umar’s assertion, saying the NPP do not think about the citizens because, there is already a high inflation in the country therefore, the increment in tariffs will worsen the plight of Ghanaians who are already battling an unprecedented economic hardship.
“The president has lost touch with the reality because there is high inflation of over 30% percent and the government does not care. They don’t care about Ghanaians and the increments are going to affect businesses and households” Said Nazir”
”we are all aware that galamsay activities are the cause of high cost of water treatment and the government is aware and has not done anything about”. He added.
In a response, Mr. Umar said even though the president appoints the executives of public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), he has no control over their decisions especially on issues such as how much Ghanaians should pay for utility services.
