Two Dead as Anthony Joshua Rushed to Hospital After Highway Collision

British boxer Anthony Joshua has been rushed to hospital following a car crash in Nigeria that has reportedly claimed two lives.

The former two-time world heavyweight champion suffered minor injuries in the collision, which occurred at 11am local time on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, according to reports.

A friend of Joshua said he is “ok but badly shaken up,” as unverified footage circulating online appears to show the 36-year-old topless and dazed in the passenger seat of a vehicle surrounded by broken glass.

Joshua, who has Nigerian heritage, was holidaying in Africa just 10 days after his high-profile bout with Jake Paul. He stopped the YouTuber-turned-boxer in six rounds in Miami earlier this month and had been expected to return to the ring in February, ahead of a potential clash with Tyson Fury later in 2026. It is unclear whether those plans will proceed following the crash.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said he is still gathering information but Joshua is believed to be “OK,” according to reports. A representative told The Independent that his UK-based team is investigating the incident.

Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo told ESPN: “The accident happened as a result of a burst tire on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road.”

Preliminary findings from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps suggest speeding may have been a factor. In a statement posted on social media, the agency said: “Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.”
