The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has shot and killed three suspected armed robbers in a fierce gun battle aimed at foiling a planned highway attack along the Anwiankwanta–Obuasi Highway.
The suspects, identified as Seidu Issah, Musah Yakubu, and Yahaya Munkaila, also known as Tijani, were gunned down on December 24, 2025 when they converged in a bush between Anwiankwanta and the Jacobu junction to stage an operation. Police say the gang opened fire on officers, who returned fire, killing the three while two others managed to escape.
Recovered from the scene were two pump action guns loaded with ammunition, one unbranded pistol, twenty-five live cartridges, and six spent cartridges. The suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police investigations link the gang to a string of violent robberies in the region, including the Jacobu airport robbery on November 3, 2025, which claimed the life of a security man. They are also suspected in multiple highway robberies along the Manso stretch, the Antoakrom robbery, the Abofour forest attack near Offinso, and the assault on a gold buyer at Anwiankwanta on December 8, 2025.
In a follow-up operation on December 26, 2025, officers raided a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta believed to be a hideout for the gang’s weapons. The raid led to the recovery of one AK47 assault rifle, one MG3 rifle, one pump action gun, and one single barrel gun, along with ammunition and personal items.
Police say strenuous efforts are underway to trace the sources of the weapons and to arrest accomplices currently at large.
