Savannah Police Arrest 22 Togolese Nationals Over Illegal Mining

The Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested twenty-two (22) Togolese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality.

The arrest took place on 23rd January 2026 when a police team intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12. The vehicle was being driven by suspect Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Upon interrogation, the occupants revealed that they were nationals of Togo and were en route to Tuntumba, a community notorious for illegal mining, with the intention of participating in galamsey operations.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary immigration and legal processes.

Police authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with further updates to be communicated in due course.

The arrest underscores the growing challenge of cross-border involvement in illegal mining, which continues to pose environmental and security threats in Ghana’s mining communities.
