Police Foil Robbery Plot, Two Suspects Killed in Shootout Near Manso Nkwanta

A swift response by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has thwarted a planned robbery operation along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta road, resulting in the deaths of two suspects and the recovery of weapons and a vehicle believed to be linked to multiple robberies.

According to police sources, intelligence received on 31 December 2025 indicated that a gang of armed robbers had assembled in a bush along the stretch, preparing to ambush commuters. A police team dispatched to the area encountered four armed men who opened fire and attempted to flee.

Police returned fire, injuring two of the suspects—later identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, alias Nana Yaw—who were pronounced dead on arrival at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. The remaining two suspects escaped into the bush and are currently being sought.

A search of the scene uncovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a black bag containing 16 live cartridges. A Toyota VOXY vehicle, believed to have been used by the suspects, was also impounded.

Investigators believe the suspects were involved in a string of robberies in Manso and Obuasi, including the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini highway attack, and a cocoa shed robbery in Sefwi. Preliminary findings suggest they operated with accomplices based in Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum, who remain at large.

Police say efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and determine the ownership of the recovered vehicle.
