Obuasi SHTS Headmaster and NDC Chairman Hopeful Resigns as Constituency Secretary, Withdraws Candidature

Mr. Zakaria Abdulai has resigned from his position as Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Juaben Constituency and withdrawn his candidature for the position of Constituency Chairman with immediate effect.

The decision comes hours after the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC directed him to step aside to allow for investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service into allegations made against him.

In a letter dated October 20, 2026, and addressed to the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Abdulai formally communicated his resignation from the constituency secretary position and also announced his withdrawal from the upcoming constituency chairmanship race.

“I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign from my position as the incumbent Secretary of the Juaben Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with immediate effect,” he stated.

He explained that he was stepping away from active party responsibilities to focus on pursuing lawful avenues to clear his name and present his side of the issues that have arisen.

Mr. Abdulai maintained his innocence, expressing gratitude to friends, relatives and supporters who have continued to stand by him and believe in him despite the allegations.

He also thanked the NDC for the opportunity to serve both as a party member and an officer, describing it as a privilege to contribute to the growth and development of a political tradition he deeply cherishes.

According to him, his decision is intended to enable him to dedicate his full attention and resources to addressing the allegations and cooperating with the relevant processes.

Despite stepping aside, Mr. Abdulai expressed optimism about returning to active political engagement once the matter is resolved.

“I remain hopeful that, once these matters are resolved, I will be able to return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the NDC,” he stated.

Copies of the resignation letter were also forwarded to the National Chairman of the NDC and the Ashanti Regional Chairman.

The development follows the NDC’s announcement directing Mr. Abdulai to step aside pending the outcome of investigations, a move the party said was aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability while upholding the principle of presumption of innocence.
