The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has announced plans to overhaul the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691), as part of efforts to strengthen regulation of Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
According to Mr. Tameklo, the existing law, which has been in force for two decades, requires significant reforms to address emerging challenges within the industry and align the regulatory framework with current market realities.
He disclosed that a new bill is being prepared and is expected to be laid before Parliament in the near future for consideration and approval.
The NPA CEO explained that the proposed legislation will enhance the Authority’s regulatory mandate, strengthen oversight of petroleum marketing and distribution activities, and improve compliance within the downstream petroleum industry.
He noted that the review forms part of broader efforts to modernise the sector, improve operational efficiency and ensure the continued protection of consumers and industry stakeholders.
Mr. Tameklo expressed confidence that the new legislation would provide a stronger legal foundation for regulating the petroleum industry while supporting transparency, safety and sustainable growth in the sector.
The proposed reforms are expected to address evolving industry trends and equip the Authority with the necessary tools to effectively regulate Ghana’s downstream petroleum market in the years ahead.
