No Rift Between BoG and GoldBod – Governor’s Board Withdrawal Was Only a Delegation, GoldBod Insists

A clarification has been issued to dispel what has been described as a wrong impression making rounds that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, “resigned” from the governing Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), suggesting a rift between the two institutions or some form of irregularity at GoldBod.

According to the clarification, the suggestion is entirely false and stems from a lack of understanding of the GoldBod Act and the actual facts.

The statement explained that the Governor, due to his busy schedule, simply nominated a representative — his Second Deputy Governor, Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu — to sit on the GoldBod Board on his behalf, in line with Section 4(e) of the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

That provision allows the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, or a representative not below the rank of a Director nominated by him, to serve on the GoldBod’s governing Board, alongside similar provisions for the Minister responsible for Finance and the Minister responsible for Mines.

The clarification noted that this pattern of delegation was not new to GoldBod’s Board. The Minister of Finance, from the outset, opted to be represented by his Deputy Minister, Hon Thomas Nyarko Ampem. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, initially sat on the Board himself but, in January 2026, nominated the Chief Director of his Ministry, Mr Marcus Haligah, to represent him owing to his tight schedule.

In the same vein, the statement said, Dr Asiama initially sat on the Board himself but, on May 11, 2026, formally wrote to the Board nominating Mrs Asante-Asiedu to represent him going forward, effective that same day.

“The fact that Dr Asiama no longer sits on the Board of the GoldBod does not mean that there is any ongoing rot at the GoldBod. Neither is there any fight between the BoG and the GoldBod,” the clarification stressed, describing the Governor’s move as a simple delegation to his deputy rather than a withdrawal driven by discord.

It further noted that GoldBod remains the main anchor of foreign exchange generation for the country and continues to work closely with the Bank of Ghana on a day-to-day basis, urging the public to disregard any suggestion to the contrary.
