The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has called on Ghana’s technology and financial ecosystem to develop home‑grown fintech solutions rather than depend on imported technologies.
Speaking at the launch of a new fintech initiative, the Minister described the event as “a test of whether Ghana is serious about building the future of finance ourselves, rather than importing it.” He emphasized government’s commitment to empowering young Ghanaians to become creators of technology and solutions.
“We want every young Ghanaian who looks at a problem to say, ‘I can build a solution,’ instead of waiting for someone else to solve it,” he said.
Hon. George noted that Ghana has the talent to produce globally competitive fintech companies, citing universities, innovation hubs, and individual developers as sources of potential. He cautioned, however, that innovation must be balanced with consumer protection and public confidence.
“Where money is involved, trust is not optional; it is the product,” he stressed.
The Minister called for regulation that “protects without suffocating” innovation, urging policymakers to keep pace with technological advancement while safeguarding the public interest.
“Technology must serve people. We are not building technology for technology’s sake; we are building it to improve lives, expand opportunity and create prosperity,” he concluded.
Observers say the Minister’s remarks reflect Ghana’s broader ambition to position itself as a leader in Africa’s digital finance revolution, combining innovation with accountability.
