Hon. Mahama Ayariga has formally assumed office as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, following a handing‑over ceremony at the Ministry in Accra.
The transition marks the reassignment of Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, who now serves as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources. In his farewell remarks, Hon. Ibrahim urged his successor to maintain continuity in the Ministry’s programmes, particularly initiatives under the Government’s 24‑Hour Economy such as the construction of 24‑hour markets. He also called for sustained attention to ongoing contracts, chieftaincy matters, and other key projects to ensure public investments deliver value to citizens.
Taking charge, Hon. Ayariga pledged a results‑oriented approach, identifying sanitation, effective local governance, and improved service delivery as immediate priorities. He underscored the need for collective action, stressing that transforming Ghana’s cities requires collaboration among Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), traditional authorities, religious bodies, civil society organisations, the media, and residents.
As part of his early engagements, the new Minister inspected waste management facilities in the Greater Accra Region, including the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), James Town Waste Transfer Station, and Kpone Landfill. The visits, he said, were aimed at assessing challenges and identifying areas requiring urgent intervention.
Hon. Ayariga further committed to working closely with MMDCEs to strengthen service delivery, improve local revenue mobilisation, and make local governance more responsive to community needs.
