Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana unhappy with passage of the E-levy bill

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana(IEAG) is unhappy with the passage of the electronic levy (E-levy) emphasizing that the Timing was not the best.

Times are tough as the rate of goods and services kept boosting in the country and the typical Ghanaians complained of the difficulties in making a living.

Mr Samson Awingobi Asaki, who is the executive secretary said this in response to the passing of the bill on Tuesday by the majority side after members of the minority side had staged a walkout.

He said passage will even make it difficult to send some money to friends and relatives using mobile money to ease the hardship they go through.

Mr Asaki expressed worried about the e-cash system that the Bank of Ghana was about to introduce would die a natural death following the e-levy passage as many would stay away from it to avoid payment of tax.

He further identified that the various mobile banking application being used by the commercial banks to facilitate easy and quick banking for their clients would also be affected.

He urged members of the public especially importers and exporters to resume the use of Cheques and cash for the compensation of goods instead of the use of electronic compensations, adding that he had been reliably enlightened that paying taxes with mobile money would not be influenced by the passage of the bill.
