Parts of Tema were plunged into darkness late Monday night after a fault occurred on a feeder at the Smelter-2 Substation. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) confirmed that the incident happened at 10:58 p.m. on February 23, disrupting electricity supply to several customers in the industrial city.
In a statement issued Tuesday, GRIDCo explained that its engineers are working around the clock to diagnose the cause of the disturbance and restore power. The company assured residents and businesses that every effort is being made to resolve the challenge promptly.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and wish to assure all affected customers that stable supply will be restored as soon as possible,” the Corporate Communications Section noted.
Tema, home to major industries and residential communities, relies heavily on uninterrupted electricity supply. Monday’s outage sparked concerns among residents and businesses, but GRIDCo emphasized its commitment to ensuring reliability across the National Interconnected Transmission System.
GRIDCo, incorporated in 2006 and operational since 2008, manages electricity transmission from wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities nationwide. The company currently serves 31 bulk customers and distribution utilities from 11 wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority.
