The Government of Ghana has paid more than GH¢4.40 billion to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and towards the settlement of second-tier pension obligations, in a move aimed at safeguarding workers’ retirement benefits and strengthening confidence in the country’s pension system.
According to information released by the Ministry of Finance, the payment forms part of government’s efforts to meet its statutory obligations and ensure the sustainability of pension contributions for public sector workers.
The ministry indicated that the funds have been directed to SSNIT and the settlement of outstanding second-tier pension commitments, helping to secure retirement incomes for thousands of workers across the country.
The payment is also expected to improve the financial stability of pension schemes and support the timely administration of retirement benefits.
Government said the settlement reflects its commitment to prudent public financial management and responsible fiscal governance, emphasizing the importance of honouring obligations owed to workers.
Officials noted that protecting pension funds remains a priority, as retirement savings play a crucial role in providing financial security for workers after active employment.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana’s social protection framework and ensure that pension contributions are managed effectively for the benefit of contributors and retirees.
Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline while fulfilling its obligations to key institutions and stakeholders, including pension funds that support the welfare of workers nationwide.
