GHS1 charge under the Energy Sector Levy comes into effect today

The updated Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141) officially comes into force today, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The revised levy framework, unveiled by the government and implemented by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), follows an earlier delay aimed at evaluating international market trends and safeguarding recent improvements in local fuel costs.

The move to activate the new policy was made in collaboration with the Ministries of Finance and Energy, following a comprehensive analysis of prevailing economic data.

Officials indicate that the timing is consistent with broader strategies to reinforce economic stability and close financial shortfalls within the energy sector.

Under the revised legislation, higher charges will be applied through the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) on various petroleum products. These adjustments are intended to enhance revenue collection for settling outstanding debts and investing in energy-related infrastructure.
