Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Refugee Protection at UNHCR Executive Committee

Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting refugees and advancing durable solutions at the 76th Annual Plenary Session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee, held in Geneva.

Delivering Ghana’s statement, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, underscored the country’s long-standing tradition of hospitality and its dedication to upholding the ideals of the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR). He emphasized that Ghana continues to make significant progress in collaboration with countries of origin to ensure the effective implementation of all aspects of durable solutions, including their legal dimensions.

Addressing the global refugee crisis, Hon. Mubarak highlighted Ghana’s partnership with the UNHCR in rolling out the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainability Programme (GRASP). The flagship initiative is designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for both refugees and host communities, strengthening resilience and fostering social cohesion.

The Minister further noted that Ghana has joined forces with neighbouring countries to develop a sub-regional strategy aimed at reinforcing national security, ensuring refugee protection, and facilitating durable, cross-border solutions.

In his remarks, Hon. Mubarak also paid tribute to the outgoing UNHCR High Commissioner, Mr. Filippo Grandi, commending his “exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of refugees worldwide.”

Ghana’s reaffirmation at the high-level session reinforces its role as a regional leader in humanitarian protection and sustainable refugee interventions, while demonstrating its continued commitment to peace, security, and human dignity.
