Ghana  Marks  2026 Commonwealth Day With ITH Flag-Raising Ceremony

 Ghana joined the global community of the Commonwealth of Nations on Monday, March 9, 2026, to commemorate Commonwealth Day with a solemn flag-raising ceremony at the Forecourt of the State House.

This year’s celebration, held under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and solidarity among Member States in tackling global challenges and expanding opportunities for economic growth, sustainable development, and youth empowerment.

In his keynote address, the Minister for the Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ideals and values of the Commonwealth, including democracy, peace, good governance, human rights, and multilateral cooperation. He highlighted Ghana’s contributions to international peace and security and emphasized the nation’s belief in equitable development through multilateralism. He noted that Ghana’s priority areas within the Commonwealth framework include climate resilience, digital transformation, and youth empowerment, urging collective action to build a prosperous and inclusive global community.

Delivering a statement on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty King Charles III, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, stressed the responsibility of Member States to safeguard the planet, support young people, and work together for a sustainable future. He underscored the urgency of addressing climate change and harnessing the potential of the Commonwealth’s youthful population.

Dr. John Obeng Apea, Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, described the Commonwealth as a unique voluntary partnership of nations bound not by geography but by shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. He emphasized the role of trust, cooperation, and innovation in strengthening economic partnerships and advancing inclusive development.

A photo exhibition showcasing Ghana’s engagement within the Commonwealth was mounted as part of the event. The ceremony drew Members of the Diplomatic Corps, senior government officials, representatives of international organizations, religious and traditional leaders, and personnel from the security services.

The commemoration reaffirmed Ghana’s place within the Commonwealth family and its commitment to working with fellow nations to unlock opportunities for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
