The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following a violent attack on Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, in Southern Lebanon, left two Ghanaian peacekeepers seriously injured.
In a statement issued on March 7, 2026, and signed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana condemned the attack as a grave violation of international law and a war crime. The government has demanded a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and called for accountability for those responsible.
“The attack on our soldiers is an attack on Ghana and we shall not relent in our demand for justice and accountability,” the statement declared. Ghana further urged the UN to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its contingent in Lebanon and of UN personnel worldwide.
The government assured the injured soldiers and their families that no effort would be spared in pursuing justice and safeguarding Ghana’s longstanding peacekeeping role. Ghana has been a consistent contributor to international peace operations, and officials stressed that the protection of personnel deployed under UN mandates must never be taken for granted.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it will continue to monitor developments closely and remain engaged with UN authorities as investigations proceed.
