Former NPP Parliamentary Candidates Endorse Dr Bawumia Ahead of Primaries

A large group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general elections has formally declared support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.

The endorsement, announced at a press conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026, strengthens internal backing for Dr Bawumia, who served as the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate and is seeking re-election to lead the party into the next general polls.

The former candidates described their collective move as a strong signal of unity and cohesion within the party, noting that the majority of frontline representatives chosen in 2024 are now rallying behind a single contender.

They explained that their declaration builds on an earlier endorsement by 63 NPP Members of Parliament elected in 2024, underscoring growing momentum within the party’s ranks.

According to the group, the decision followed broad consultations across party structures and wider society. These engagements involved polling station executives, constituency leaders, former party officers, councils of elders and patrons, as well as youth groups, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business leaders, opinion leaders, religious figures and traditional authorities.

Feedback from these consultations, they said, revealed overwhelming grassroots support for Dr Bawumia across constituencies.

The former candidates emphasised that their backing was based on sober analysis, duty and conviction, not inducement or pressure.

They described Dr Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President, as a visionary leader with competence, integrity and innovation—citing his role in the country’s digital transformation, contributions to economic management, and leadership in initiatives such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and broader macroeconomic stabilisation efforts.

The group further presented him as the most prepared, experienced and winnable candidate for the party’s future, with a clear vision anchored on digitalisation, economic transformation, infrastructure expansion, human capital development, agricultural modernisation and good governance.

They pledged to work actively with him to secure victory in both the primaries and future general elections, while urging party members to unite behind his candidacy in the interest of the NPP and Ghana.
