The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has called for stronger collaboration between Government and faith‑based organisations in tackling national development challenges.
He made the appeal when the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana paid a courtesy call on him in Accra to discuss areas of mutual interest, including sanitation, the National Cathedral, education, healthcare, and religious tolerance.
Sanitation featured prominently in the discussions. Hon. Ayariga stressed the need for a change in attitudes towards waste management, urging households and communities to take greater responsibility. He advocated for waste separation at source, proposing that households adopt at least three dustbins to facilitate proper disposal. He further called for renewed collaboration with churches to promote sanitation and revive the National Sanitation Day initiative.
The Christian Council expressed readiness to partner with the Ministry through its Environmental Care and Cleanliness Programme, pledging support for initiatives aimed at improving sanitation nationwide.
The meeting also addressed the National Cathedral project. The Council’s General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, said the Christian community was prepared to mobilise resources locally and internationally, while appealing for Government support to create conditions necessary for completion.
Hon. Ayariga noted that concerns surrounding the Cathedral should be approached through dialogue and consensus, particularly on issues of location, cost, and financing. He emphasised that Government is not opposed to Ghana having a National Cathedral, but urged stakeholders within the Christian community to develop a common position on the way forward.
