Chairman Wontumi Reports to CID Over Akonta Mining Probe

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Monday, October 6, 2025, reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He arrived at the CID Headquarters in Accra at about 9:30 a.m., in compliance with a directive issued by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Dr. Ayine, addressing the press on Friday, October 3, had cautioned that the NPP regional chairman would be arrested should he fail to appear before investigators, stressing that charges against him had already been completed.

The case centres on Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is currently under investigation for alleged illegal mining activities.

According to the Attorney General, progress on the matter had been delayed in the past because some critical dockets were allegedly concealed under the previous administration.

Chairman Wontumi’s appearance before the CID is expected to pave the way for further action on the case, which has attracted significant public interest due to its political and environmental implications.
