Bold Leadership Key to Ghana’s Economic Recovery – Dr. Yamson

Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, has sounded the alarm on Ghana’s economic woes, citing poor governance and corruption as the root causes of a growing crisis.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue’s opening on March 3, 2025, Dr. Yamson expressed deep concern over the rise of “Generation Hustlers” – a disillusioned youth who’ve lost faith in Ghana’s leadership and are eager to abandon ship.

These young people, according to Dr. Yamson, are the unfortunate byproduct of a system plagued by corruption and mismanagement. The resulting economic instability has left them feeling hopeless and disconnected from their country’s future.

As Dr. Yamson aptly put it, Ghana has succeeded in creating a “new generation called Generation Hustlers” who are desperate to escape the country’s economic quagmire.

“We have succeeded in creating a new generation of young people called Generation Hustlers, who have lost hope, respect, and confidence in their political leaders and their country and just want to leave Ghana behind them and relocate to foreign lands,” he stated.

While acknowledging that external shocks have played a role in Ghana’s economic difficulties, Dr. Yamson asserted that the country’s problems are primarily homegrown.

“I must agree that in the last 68 years of independence, Ghana has also suffered severe disruptions and dislocations from external shocks, but the stark truth is that the overwhelming majority of our problems are homegrown,” he emphasized.
