Former Gender Minister, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo has said the absence of a substantive Minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is negatively affecting the country and the demographic groups that fall under the Ministry.
She said the President must sit up and appoint another sector minister.
On October 6, 2021, President Akufo-Addo appointed Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah to act as caretaker Gender Minister after he extended the leave of absence for Sarah Adwoa Safo.
A statement by the Presidency said the Dome Kwabena MP was on leave for personal reasons. She has not returned to her post.
Speaking in interview with Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3FM Wednesday June 1, 2022, while reacting to news of flogging of two young persons in Wa, as captured in a video, Nana Oye said “As President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should sit up and take a decision on appointing a substantive minister. Whatever it is, we will need to have a Minister in the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, to see to it that the work is done.
“As we have it now, work has slowed down, there is a retrogression and it is not good enough for the people of Ghana and for the demographic groups, they are suffering.”
The two young persons who were flogged were paraded at the forecourt of the Wa Naa’s Palace on Tuesday, May 31, 2022), and lashed by a group.
A video of the incident, which happened on Tuesday afternoon, has been shared on social media.
The girl and boy had been seen having sex in a leaked video. The video had a date stamp of May 29 [Sunday].
