NPP Presidential Aspirants Sign Peace Pact Ahead of January 31 Primaries

All five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace pact committing to unity, respect for the electoral process, and support for the eventual winner ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026, primaries.

The aspirants include Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe; and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Presidential Press Secretary and NPP General Secretary.

Mr. Kwabena Agyepong is contesting the flagbearership for the third time, having previously run in 2007 and 2023. Mr. Kennedy Agyapong is making his second attempt after placing second to Dr. Bawumia in 2023. Dr. Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum are both debutants in the race, while Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, is seeking the slot for the second time.

The pact affirms that the primaries have been conducted in a transparent, inclusive, and fair manner, with all aspirants given equal opportunity to participate. The candidates pledged to accept the outcome as a valid expression of the will of the delegates.

They further committed to promoting peace and unity within the party before, during, and after the primaries, vowing to avoid actions or rhetoric that could undermine cohesion. Importantly, the aspirants agreed to support the eventual flagbearer not only in the 2028 general elections but also in efforts to secure a strong parliamentary majority.

Any disputes arising from breaches of the pact will be addressed through the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms in line with the NPP constitution.

This development is seen as a crucial step toward ensuring a peaceful and united front as the NPP heads into a decisive primary that will shape its future leadership.
