Following JoyNews’ recent Hotline documentary exposing illegal mining activities around the Bui Power Plant, Collins Adomako-Mensah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, has urged the establishment of a permanent security presence at the facility.
Mr Adomako-Mensah raised alarm over the current security arrangements, describing them as insufficient to confront the scale of galamsey operations in the enclave.
“The cost of security on the banks of Bui has gone down. They continuously have to engage security personnel to be there 24 hours. But if you look at the number they have in terms of security, the number of people who man those areas as security agents, and you compare that to activities and the number of people who are involved in the galamsey, obviously, they will be overpowered,” he explained.
“And that is why we need a bigger hand to come in and assist Bui Power Authority in solving this particular menace,” he added.
The legislator, who also represents Afigya Kwabre North, pressed for swift intervention to protect the plant and avert further disruption to its operations. He stressed that bolstered security is essential not only for safeguarding critical national infrastructure but also for preserving the environment.
