Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kwabena Agyepong, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s flagbearer position, becoming the first aspirant to do so ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Agyepong submitted his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, amid enthusiastic cheers from supporters and well-wishers who gathered to show their backing.

The NPP opened its window for flagbearer nominations on July 29, 2025, with the deadline set for August 28. The party has also announced that its presidential primaries will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a candidate who will lead the party into the next general election.

In a related development, the party has expanded its voter register for the upcoming primaries to include new categories of party officials and dignitaries. This update was communicated in a circular issued on August 26, 2025, signed by Mr. William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee.

According to the circular, the decision aligns with Article 13(1)(11) of the NPP Constitution and follows a motion adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference held on July 19, 2025.

The move signals the party’s commitment to broadening participation and ensuring a more inclusive electoral process as it prepares for a pivotal leadership transition.
