The government has reaffirmed its commitment to constructing the long-awaited Volivo Bridge over the Volta River, with a fresh bidding process officially opened as part of the procurement arrangements for the project.
Speaking at the bid opening ceremony, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, underscored the significance of the bridge in improving connectivity and driving economic growth in communities along the Volta River.
He said the project would facilitate trade, enhance transportation and improve access to essential services for residents in the affected communities.
According to the Minister, an evaluation team has been constituted to assess the bids submitted by prospective contractors. He disclosed that the evaluation process is expected to be completed within seven days, paving the way for construction to commence at the beginning of next year.
Mr Agbodza noted that the Volivo Bridge project is being undertaken through a partnership between the governments of Ghana and Japan, describing it as a symbol of the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
“We must build this bridge as one of the most concrete pieces of evidence of the cordial and progressive relationship between the people of Ghana and Japan. I think this is the time and we are confident that we will select a contractor who will have all the support from the Government of Ghana to start the project,” he stated.
The Minister expressed optimism that the procurement process would lead to the selection of a competent contractor capable of delivering the project successfully.
When completed, the Volivo Bridge is expected to significantly ease the movement of people and goods across the Volta River, while improving transportation links between communities on both sides of the river.
The project is also anticipated to stimulate economic activities, enhance regional integration and contribute to the socio-economic development of communities within the project area.
