Cabinet Approves Bill to Regulate Public Relations Practice

Cabinet has approved a bill aimed at regulating public relations practice in Ghana, promoting professionalism and enhancing credibility within the industry, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has announced.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, at the 2026 National PR Summit in Koforidua, Ms. Muslim said the proposed legislation would provide a legal framework to guide the practice of public relations and strengthen standards across the profession.

The summit was held under the theme, “Public Relations and Leadership Readiness.”

According to her, the government remains committed to supporting the growth and professional development of public relations practitioners in the country.

As part of this commitment, she disclosed that government would support the completion of the permanent secretariat of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), a move expected to strengthen the institute’s capacity to deliver its mandate.

Ms. Muslim further revealed that plans are underway to provide discounted registration for up to 90 per cent of public relations officers, making professional certification and membership more accessible to practitioners.

She also announced a series of capacity-building programmes to be organised in collaboration with industry experts to enhance the skills, competencies and professional standards of public relations officers across the country.

The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson noted that effective public relations practice plays a critical role in promoting transparency, strengthening public trust and facilitating effective communication between institutions and the public.

Participants at the summit discussed strategies for improving leadership readiness within the public relations profession and examined the role of communication practitioners in supporting national development.

The approval of the bill is expected to mark a significant step towards the professionalisation of the public relations sector, while creating a framework for ethical practice, accountability and continuous professional development.
