Government Hands Over 128 Vehicles to MMDCEs to Boost Local Governance

The Government has handed over 128 vehicles to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) as part of efforts to strengthen local governance, improve service delivery and enhance the operational capacity of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The vehicles, comprising sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks, were presented by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, at a ceremony held at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina, Accra.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Minister said the vehicles were intended to improve mobility and enable MMDCEs to effectively monitor and supervise development projects within their respective jurisdictions.

He noted that efficient transportation remains critical to the successful implementation of government programmes and policies at the local level, particularly in monitoring infrastructure projects and ensuring effective service delivery to communities.

Hon. Ayariga urged the MMDCEs to use the vehicles responsibly and maintain them properly, stressing that they are state assets provided strictly for official assignments.

“The vehicles are government property and must be used solely for the purpose of serving the public and advancing development in your respective districts,” he emphasised.

The Minister said the intervention forms part of the government’s broader decentralisation agenda aimed at strengthening local governance structures, promoting accountability and improving public service delivery across the country.

The provision of the vehicles is expected to enhance the ability of district assemblies to execute their mandates and facilitate closer engagement between local authorities and the communities they serve.

Government officials expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute to the effective implementation of development programmes and accelerate socio-economic progress at the district level.
