The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has engaged commercial banks on a new Spot Foreign Exchange (FX) and Intermediation Framework aimed at providing authorised banks with predictable and transparent access to United States dollars through its GoldBod GoFX platform.
The initiative is expected to enhance efficiency, transparency and fairness in Ghana’s foreign exchange market while strengthening regulatory compliance.
Under the framework, GoldBod will ordinarily conduct spot FX sales on Mondays and Wednesdays. In instances where demand exceeds the available foreign exchange supply, allocations will be made on a pro-rata basis to ensure equitable distribution among participating banks.
The framework also provides for same-day settlement of transactions, a measure expected to improve liquidity management and transaction efficiency for financial institutions.
According to GoldBod, the system will operate under the regulatory oversight of the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance, reinforcing accountability and adherence to established market rules.
The GoFX platform will serve as the central electronic portal for the submission of requests, allocation of foreign exchange, transaction history management and audit trail documentation.
Officials say the digital platform is designed to improve visibility across the foreign exchange allocation process and provide participating banks with a more transparent and structured mechanism for accessing dollars.
The introduction of the framework forms part of broader efforts to deepen confidence in Ghana’s foreign exchange market by promoting transparency, fairness and operational efficiency while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Industry observers believe the initiative could help streamline foreign exchange transactions and strengthen market stability through a rules-based allocation system supported by technology and regulatory oversight.
