SSNIT Moves to Reclaim Encroached Beachfront Lands at Labadi Hotels

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has secured the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to remove unauthorised occupants from beachfront lands adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

According to a statement issued by the Board of Trustees of SSNIT on October 2, 2026, the action follows persistent unlawful occupation, encroachment and unauthorised activities on the beachfront areas directly in front of the two hotels.

SSNIT explained that the hotels form part of its investment portfolio and constitute significant national hospitality and tourism assets.

The Trust noted that, as a fiduciary institution, it has a responsibility to safeguard the investments, preserve their value and ensure they continue to generate sustainable returns for contributors and pensioners under the Basic National Social Security Scheme.

“These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana,” the statement stressed.

SSNIT said the continued encroachment poses several risks, including threats to the safety and security of hotel guests, employees, service providers and visitors, as well as unauthorised access and proximity to sensitive guest and operational areas.

Other concerns cited by the Trust include exposure to fire, sanitation, environmental and public health hazards, deterioration of the beachfront experience and service standards expected of internationally recognised hospitality facilities, and damage to the coastal ecosystem resulting from construction activities and beach sand extraction.

The Trust further warned that the situation has the potential to damage the reputation of the hotels, SSNIT and Ghana’s tourism industry, while disrupting hotel operations and negatively affecting patronage, revenue and overall financial performance.

According to the statement, increasing encroachment also raises the cost and difficulty of recovering the affected lands.

SSNIT said it therefore requested support from National Security to protect the assets on behalf of Ghanaian workers and pensioners.

The Trust assured the public that the beachfront areas would be cleared and restored to a safe and desirable condition. It added that the beaches would remain open to the public after the exercise.

The statement was issued by the Board of Trustees of SSNIT and dated October 2, 2026.
