Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held a productive meeting with Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Johann Wadephul, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The discussions centered on strengthening Ghana–Germany relations and advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The two ministers explored avenues for expanded economic cooperation, with emphasis on investment opportunities for German companies in Ghana. Particular attention was given to collaboration in railway infrastructure and engineering, as Ghana pursues the revitalisation and modernisation of its rail network.
On migration and labour mobility, the ministers examined the possibility of developing structured labour exchange programmes to create legal pathways for skilled Ghanaian workers to access opportunities in Germany. They also addressed irregular migration, stressing the need to tackle its root causes through skills development, education, and employment creation.
Security concerns featured prominently in the talks, with both sides expressing alarm over the deteriorating situation in the Sahel and the growing threat of violent extremism. They underscored the importance of stronger regional and international coordination. The ministers also condemned the recruitment and trafficking of African youth into the Russia–Ukraine war, reaffirming the need to prevent the exploitation of African nationals in armed conflicts.
Hon. Ablakwa commended Germany’s constructive engagement with Ghana’s reparatory justice agenda, particularly ongoing cooperation on the return and restitution of cultural properties and heritage. Both sides agreed to maintain close consultations, identify practical areas for further collaboration, and conclude an implementation strategy to advance the matters discussed.
The meeting reflects Ghana’s broader diplomatic drive to safeguard the welfare of its citizens, strengthen international partnerships, and secure sustainable development through strategic cooperation.
