The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has facilitated the safe return of 180 Ghanaian nationals from Libya as part of ongoing efforts to assist vulnerable citizens stranded abroad.
The returnees — comprising 27 females and 153 males, including children and infants — were received at the Kotoka International Airport by the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana, H.E. Mohammed Lawan Gana, alongside officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Welcoming the group, H.E. Gana assured them that their safe arrival marked an important step towards rebuilding their lives. He encouraged the returnees to view their return not as a setback but as an opportunity to begin anew, urging them to embrace available support and consider opportunities in skills development, entrepreneurship, and livelihood assistance to aid reintegration.
The repatriation forms part of continued cooperation among Ghana, IOM, and ECOWAS to support the voluntary return and reintegration of nationals in vulnerable situations abroad. The initiative underscores the institutions’ commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration while ensuring that Ghanaians requiring assistance receive the necessary support to return home and reintegrate into society.
Authorities confirmed that the returnees will receive appropriate assistance as they begin the reintegration process, with relevant institutions and partners working together to facilitate their transition and safeguard their wellbeing.
