The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called for deeper collaboration between Ghana and China to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. He said enhanced cooperation in STEM and emerging technologies would equip Ghanaian learners with the skills needed to meet future demands.
Hon. Iddrisu made the appeal when the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, paid a working visit to the Ministry. He expressed appreciation to the Government of China for its continued support to Ghana’s education sector, including the establishment of Confucius Institutes in Ghanaian universities, which he noted had strengthened educational and cultural ties between the two countries.
The Minister also thanked China for its US$30 million grant to the Government of Ghana, earmarked for the establishment of the University of Science and Technology in Damongo, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. He expressed optimism that Ambassador Cong Song’s tenure would further consolidate the longstanding bilateral relationship, particularly in education and technology.
Hon. Iddrisu stressed that Ghana looked forward to expanding the partnership beyond existing interventions to ensure that learners at every level have opportunities to acquire practical STEM and digital skills.
Ambassador Cong Song reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana and strengthening partnerships that contribute to the country’s development, especially in education, science and technology.
