The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that the Government of Ghana fully financed the evacuation of its nationals from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, dismissing claims that South Africa requested reimbursement.
In a statement issued in Accra, the Ministry emphasized that Ghana did not seek financial or material support from South Africa. It confirmed that more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated since May 2026, with evacuees receiving reintegration funds and relief items upon arrival in Ghana.
The Ministry underscored that the evacuation was entirely Ghanaian‑funded, reflecting government’s commitment to protecting citizens abroad during crises. It expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and Ghanaian partners for ensuring the successful operation.
Officials reiterated that the welfare of Ghanaians abroad remains a priority, and the evacuation demonstrates Ghana’s resolve to act decisively in safeguarding its nationals.
