The Government has announced a commitment of more than US$76 million to finance flood‑mitigation infrastructure projects across the country for the 2026–2027 period.
The allocation follows the devastating floods in June, which displaced thousands of households and damaged critical infrastructure. In response, emergency funding was released to support affected communities while laying the groundwork for long‑term flood control measures.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the funds will be directed toward drainage expansion, rehabilitation of flood‑prone areas, and construction of protective works in vulnerable communities. The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to strengthen resilience against climate‑related disasters.
Officials say the investment will complement ongoing relief efforts and ensure that communities are better protected against recurring floods. The programme is expected to create jobs in construction and engineering while safeguarding lives and property.
The Government has emphasized that the commitment reflects its determination to address perennial flooding challenges and build sustainable infrastructure to support economic growth.
