The Government has disclosed that it spent US$13.52 million on flood‑control works between 2025 and 2026, an amount exceeding the combined expenditure of the previous six years.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the investment reflects a sharp increase in funding for flood‑mitigation projects, with US$3 million spent in 2025 and US$10.5 million in 2026. Officials say the works included drainage rehabilitation, stormwater management, and protective infrastructure in flood‑prone communities.
The Ministry emphasized that the accelerated spending demonstrates Government’s commitment to tackling perennial flooding challenges, which have caused widespread displacement and damage to property in recent years.
The announcement comes on the heels of broader allocations, including a US$76 million commitment for 2026–2027 flood‑mitigation infrastructure, aimed at strengthening resilience and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
Observers note that the scale of recent investment marks a significant policy shift, positioning flood management as a national priority in line with climate adaptation and disaster‑risk reduction strategies.
