President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stirring call to African leaders to seize the moment and accelerate collective action toward achieving Universal Health Coverage and ending preventable diseases across the continent.
“We have gathered here because we are the front line of this liberation struggle. We are the generals of the Continent’s Battalion of Change Seekers,” President Mahama declared at the Opening Ceremony of the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health in Accra.
Framing Africa’s modern struggle as one not only against poverty and inequality but also against the diseases that continue to limit the potential of millions, President Mahama urged leaders to pursue bold, home‑grown solutions that place Africa firmly in control of its health future.
He emphasized the need to strengthen health systems, expand access to quality care, and mobilize greater investment in the sector, stressing that the summit’s success must be measured by outcomes citizens can feel in their daily lives — better‑equipped facilities, improved access to medicines, timely diagnosis, and better care for mothers and children.
The Extraordinary Summit is expected to deliver renewed commitments toward ending AIDS and tuberculosis, improving maternal health, and advancing equitable healthcare for all Africans.
