The Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has inspected ongoing construction of major storm drains in flood‑prone areas of Accra, underscoring Government’s commitment to tackling perennial flooding in the capital.
At Dansoman Otojor, engineers have completed a one‑kilometre earth drain designed to channel stormwater from communities including Tabora, Anyaa, Sowutoum, Santa Maria, Awoshie, and parts of Mallam directly to the ocean. The project is expected to ease the heavy flow of water that has historically overwhelmed residential areas during downpours.
Works are also progressing steadily on the Kaneshie Drain Channel, covering the Accra Academy–First Light–Kaneshie stretch. Lot 2 of the project, which extends from the Bank of Ghana Quarters through Abossey Okai and Christ Temple to the Odaw River, is advancing with significant improvements already visible.
According to the Ministry, these interventions form part of a broader programme to strengthen Accra’s drainage infrastructure and reduce the devastating impact of floods that have repeatedly disrupted livelihoods and damaged property.
