Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu is championing a significant reform in Ghana’s political landscape by advocating for the removal of the “winner-takes-all” system.
This system, which concentrates power in the hands of the winning party, has been criticized for marginalizing other political voices and undermining the foundations of an inclusive democracy.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, the Tamale South MP, this system must be abolished to pave the way for a more representative government, similar to South Africa’s proportional representation model. He emphasized, “Winner takes away all, we must do away with that in any future constitution of Ghana.”
The call for reform gained momentum following a stakeholder workshop organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to discuss potential constitutional amendments. This move is expected to promote a more inclusive political environment, where diverse voices are heard and represented.
“It would have also watered down the powers of the president and we must do a cross-jurisdictional study. Kenya has amended to decouple the minister from the MP.
“What they have observed is that those ministers who are not MPs don’t care more about constituents than those who are MPs who will perform in order to keep their seat.”
