Vice President Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Land and Water Protection

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources, describing the fight against land and water degradation as a matter of national survival.

During a working visit to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Wednesday, the Vice President received a comprehensive briefing led by sector Minister Hon. Armah Kofi Buah on the state of Ghana’s land, forests, and water bodies, and the decisive actions being taken to protect them.

She commended the Ministry and its agencies for their efforts, particularly under the Blue Water Initiative, which has seen the deployment of over 1,600 trained water guards across the country to combat illegal mining and related threats to water bodies. The initiative is backed by strengthened collaboration with the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, the Attorney-General’s Department, and other key institutions.

“This fight is not only a moral obligation but a matter of national survival,” the Vice President stated, adding that degradation affects every Ghanaian, regardless of location.

She emphasized the importance of inclusive land administration reforms, calling for the active involvement of women land users, especially women farmers. She also underscored the need for decentralization to address long-standing challenges at the community level.

The Vice President urged all agencies to deepen stakeholder education, enhance enforcement, and maintain strong inter-agency collaboration.

“Government remains resolute. The progress made so far shows that with discipline, coordination, and sustained political will, Ghana can reclaim her lands, protect her waters, and restore the integrity of her environment,” she concluded.
