Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has lauded the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for what she described as remarkable strides in strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in 2025.
Her commendation came after a courtesy visit by the NHIA Board and Executive Management, led by Board Member Dr. Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, who briefed her on the Authority’s achievements for the year and highlights from the recently concluded NHIA High-Level Stakeholder Conference.
During the engagement, NHIA Deputy Chief Executive for Operations, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto—representing the Chief Executive—outlined the Authority’s key milestones, ongoing reforms, and feedback gathered from stakeholders at the conference.
The Vice President expressed delight at the growth in active NHIS membership, which has now surpassed 20 million. She urged the Authority to intensify public education campaigns, particularly in underserved and remote communities, to extend coverage to more uninsured citizens.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further emphasized the critical role of preventive healthcare as Ghana moves forward with the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) initiative. She also encouraged greater private-sector involvement, calling on Roche, a major sponsor of the stakeholder conference, to invest in local capacity building by training more Ghanaian health professionals.
She signaled her readiness, subject to her schedule, to join the Health Minister in unveiling the revised NHIS service tariffs. Ahead of this, she urged the NHIA to embark on broad public sensitisation, including education on measures being taken to eliminate illegal charges at health facilities.
Senior Aide to the Vice President, Ofosu Ampofo, reinforced the call for proactive communication, urging the Authority to “tell the NHIS story” by showcasing the impact of recent reforms on service delivery and the scheme’s financial sustainability.
The NHIA leadership expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s counsel and pledged to continue building a stronger, fairer, and more resilient NHIS.
In attendance were NHIA Board Member and President of the Ghana Medical Association, Professor Ernest York; Deputy Chief Executive for Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Raphael Segkpeb; Deputy Chief Executive for Finance and Investment, Ms. Anatu Seidu Bogobiri, Esq.; along with other directors of the Authority.
