The Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has concluded a crucial meeting with the leadership of Ghana’s teacher unions, resulting in the suspension of a threatened nationwide strike.
The engagement addressed long‑standing concerns over the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales. Following assurances and concrete measures agreed upon, union leaders confirmed that the strike action would be called off.
Among the key resolutions, teachers will no longer be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for salary‑scale placement. Instead, the Ghana Education Service (GES) will provide the Controller and Accountant‑General’s Department (CAGD) with the requisite data to facilitate adjustments and payments.
Close to 80,000 teachers are expected to be placed on their correct salary scales as part of the process, a move welcomed by unions as a significant step toward fairness and efficiency.
The Ministry of Education expressed appreciation to the teacher unions for their constructive engagement and commitment to resolving the matter in the interest of Ghana’s education system and, most importantly, the welfare of teachers.
