President Akuffo-Addo has shared his views on the Supreme Court ruling about Deputy Speakers of Parliament being able to vote while presiding over the business of the house.
His statement puts to rest issues that came up during processes to approve the 2022 budget.
In the President’s view, Judiciary has the only obligation of deciphering the law of the land and so the views by minorities that the ruling constitutes an interference of the work of Parliament cannot be the possibility.
He again added that no one is above the law and parliament must respect the ruling.
But on the Facebook page of former President, John Dramani Mahama, he argued that “if deputy speakers, because they are members of parliament can vote while presiding as Speaker, they could well be able to participate in any debate on the floor over which they presiding”, adding that “this is the absurdity into which the Supreme court ruling has to lead us.”
