Profile of Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman Who Died in Wednesday’s Helicopter Crash

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was among some 8 persons who died in a tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of several high-ranking government and security officials, who were on board a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter en route to a government assignment in Obuasi. Dr. Sarpong, a seasoned politician and public servant, was among the casualties.

A prominent figure in Ghana’s political landscape, Dr. Sarpong served in various leadership roles during his career, including as Ashanti Regional Minister and later as Central Regional Minister under the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama. He was widely respected for his calm demeanor, loyalty to the party, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Born in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Sarpong rose through the ranks of local governance, first serving as Mayor of Kumasi before his elevation to ministerial positions. He was known for his grassroots approach to politics and his ability to connect with constituents across diverse backgrounds.

At the time of his death, Dr. Sarpong was serving as the First Vice Chairman of the NDC, playing a key role in party reorganization efforts ahead of the 2028 general elections. He was actively involved in reconciliation processes within the party and had recently led several outreach initiatives in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions.

Dr. Sarpong held a doctorate degree in Development Studies and was an advocate for youth empowerment and local development. His death has sent shockwaves through the political establishment, with party members, colleagues, and the public expressing deep sorrow and tributes to his legacy.

He is survived by his wife and children.

The NDC in a brief statement described his passing as a “monumental loss to the party and the nation,” adding that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

Authorities are yet to provide full details of the cause of the crash, as investigations are still underway.
