Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, is reported dead in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
He was among eight government and military officials on board the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter that went down en route to Obuasi, where they were scheduled to attend the launch of a Responsible Mining Programme. The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the tragic deaths and announced that the national flag will fly at half-mast in their honour.
Alhaji Muniru Mohammed was a key figure in Ghana’s national security architecture, serving in one of the most sensitive and high-risk positions in the country. As Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, he played a strategic role in coordinating intelligence operations and facilitating inter-agency security collaboration.
Before his appointment to the National Security Secretariat, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed served in various high-level capacities, including as a Minister for Food and Agriculture under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. He was widely regarded as a calm, principled, and experienced public servant with deep insight into governance and national stability.
Known for his quiet but firm leadership style, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed worked behind the scenes to support national intelligence coordination, crisis response mechanisms, and inter-agency communication between the military, police, and civilian intelligence services. His commitment to duty earned him respect among security professionals and political leaders alike.
His death, alongside that of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and other state officials and military personnel, is a devastating blow to the government and the country.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash, as the nation continues to mourn the passing of a man whose work helped preserve Ghana’s peace and security.
