President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances for all political appointees as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce public spending and promote fiscal discipline.
This move is intended to redirect public funds towards vital sectors critical to national development. The President emphasized that leadership must also share in the sacrifices being asked of citizens during these challenging economic times, stating, “Leadership must bear its part of the sacrifice, calling in the people to make the same.”
The government has already introduced several cost-cutting measures, including reducing the size of the public sector and canceling satellite TV subscriptions.
Additionally, a new levy of one Ghana cedi per liter of fuel purchased at the pump is expected to be implemented soon. This levy is aimed at providing the Ministry of Energy with sufficient funds to procure fuel for power generation.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, July 15, in an official statement from the Presidency, signed by the Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
