President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the death of His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon as a profound loss to the kingdom and the nation.
Receiving a delegation from the Dagbon Traditional Council at the Presidency to formally announce the death, President Mahama extended condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning the loss of a revered traditional leader.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Ya-Na Abukari II, the President recalled their close collaboration during efforts to restore peace to Dagbon, describing the late King as a father figure whose wisdom and guidance transcended political and social boundaries.
He paid tribute to the monarch’s remarkable leadership, noting his role in transforming Dagbon from a period of conflict into a symbol of reconciliation, unity, and stability. “Ya-Na Abukari II’s commitment to peacebuilding strengthened traditional governance, promoted dialogue, and established a lasting framework for Dagbon’s future,” President Mahama stated.
Beyond Dagbon, the President described the late King as a national statesman and peacemaker whose humility and dedication to Ghana’s unity earned him respect across the country. He assured the chiefs and people of Dagbon that government will work closely with the Traditional Council to provide the necessary support and state honours as preparations are made for the final funeral rites.
President Mahama prayed for the peaceful repose of Ya-Na Abukari II and for strength and comfort for the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation.
